Whew! Tough week. Doing dictionary days along with checkout isn't the best idea. Better, I think, to adapt the district plan for handling it in 2 sessions and instead, do the dictionary handout and lesson all in one of our non-checkout days. The lesson they recommend could be amended to include some vocabulary words from the Open Court topic for 3rd grade to help put it in context for the kids.
Realized today that one of the standards (kids need to know the difference between public and school library) really needs to be explained to the kids. Dictionary Day is a good time to at least introduce it and then follow-up throughout the year.
Worksheet for 4th and 5th grade was too difficult for many. Need to provide the words along with the scrambles. Too big of a leap to have them use their bibliography worksheet to find the words.
